Jesus another elderly person hit by a bus or a car?

What is this open season on the elderly? My Mom/Dad /School officials and the cross walk guard when I was growing up told me over and over again to look both ways before I cross the street, but I say look at the drivers face before you step inside the crosswalk, pause and even stop before you step off the curb in Honolulu, Hawaii or you could end up on the Six O'Clock news and not in a good way as another traffic fatality , or even dead.I've noticed that an uncanny amount of the pedestrian injuries and deaths are elderly persons, hit by buses Roberts buses to be exact. Every time I read, look or hear about somebody getting killed in a traffic pedestrian incident its usually involves a Roberts company bus. What is the city /state county /legislators doing about investigating the frequency of Roberts involvement in these traffic fatalities.Something is going on and someone needs to get to the bottom of it before we don't have any old people left. What's next small children? Its safer to be a dog than a person on the streets of Honolulu.

What do you think id going on and what should and can be done about it?

Is there anything at all can be done about the senior citizens being killed in and out of the crosswalks? Is it because people are doing everything but driving when they are supposed to just driving? Talking on cell phones putting on their makeup, eating, hollering at their kids, being distrated by some pretty girl in a skimpy outfit, not paying attention, worried about thir finances, what is it that takes peoples minds off of driving with care. A car is just like a gun in the wrong hands ,with some people out there on the road. Are they drunk ,high cazy, or just bad drivers. Is this intentional? Are people being killed on purpose, is this someones idea of a sick and twisted game? WHAT?

getting hit

I understand the frustration of this. When I use to work in town, I saw a lot of Seniors and people who don't speak or understand English (you can spot them right away) They are in their own little world. Meaning, they need to buy what they want and "hurry" to get to the next store to buy the next item on their shopping list. Yes, Seniors can't walk very fast, but they can sure haul a lot of goodies in their bags and dragg'em on the bus. I even saw this with my own grandmother, the visor she use to wear was so low on her head the visor touched her eyeglasses. She could not see anything or anyone in front of her because her visor was blocking her view. All she could do was really lift her neck and be able to see what is upfront. Most of the seniors wear hat or visor and they all wear their hats to block the sunlight, but it's also blocking their view of seeing upfront. I often told my grandmother don't wear your visor like that..you can't see where you are going. She kept telling me it was the sunlight was botering her. I could not stop her from changning the way she wore her visor. Shoppers in Chinatown j-walk all the time, because "no more bus " they feel it's okay to just cross the stree when ever they feel like it. They don't want to wait in the crosswalk, because they are always in a hurry. They push and shove to be the first one to board the bus to get home. I no longer work in town, so I don't see it often, but on the Leeward Coast, we have a similar problem too..beachgoers trying to cross Farrington Hwy w/o a crosswalk or traffic signal and they think they are invincible...

True but legally pedestrians have the right of way

Especially in a crosswalk, whether they are old or young, more young people have been killed this year in the crosswalks on Honolulu streets, people under 65 years of age, killed on bikes on skateboards, motorcycles or just plain run over in the crosswalks. Cars have breaks, turn signals, horns, and the lousy traffic signals in Honolulu don't help either, some give you less time to get across the street than others most don't work at all all are out of time, no standard settings for the lights in this city. Take out your watch and timed them yourself if you think all of them are timed the same, go to different crosswalk lights in this city and compare the timing of the amount of time given to get to the other side of the street.

Another senoir citizen gets hit again?

A woman who has payed her dues probably raised some responsible kids was a loving wife mother and perhaps a Grandmother, was moyed down on a Honolulu street and you mean to tell me that this was her fault? When as a pedestrian and a senoir citizen she has the right of way a is supposed to be protected by a slew of laws already on the books about injuring or killing the vunerable in our society the disabled ,both physically and mentally, the aged or infirmed. Hell we protect dogs and cats better than we protect the wisdom of us all our senior citizen killing off a wealth of experience, love, nuturing , and knowledge. MORE CAN AND MUST BE DONE TO PROTECT OUR SENIOR POPULATION,OUR DISABLED,OUR VUNERABLE OF OUR SOCIETY, FIX THE DAMN TRAFFIC LIGHTS SO THAT THEY HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET ACROSS SAFELY. The ones outside my apart were knocked over on the PALI and still haven't been replaced and its the one with the blind side off the freeway when you are turing right on the PALI going towards the Longs and the Safeway on Nuuanu. Someone hit it and now it gone, and traffic is caos, and old people have to play dodge car and truck and buses just to get their groceries home. I live on S. School St shpo at the Longs and the Safeway. I'm a half a century or better , but I'm a Vietnam Veteran in real good shape from the service with the body of a nineteen year old, built like Bruce Lee abs and all and just as in fighting shape dangerous because of The NAM WAR but there are those my age and beyond who are not. WEneed our light back on the PALI NOW!

we all need to watch where we are going

Everyone needs to be careful, weather in a car, pedestrian walking on the sidewalk, or getting off a bus, or even a cat or dog just running into the street carelessly. Yes, I agree that lights need to be changed, drivers need to slow down on blind spots, drivers need to know where the crosswalks are on the street. City needs to mark the crosswalks more clearly. Too much signage on the sidewalks, it "clutters" the vison of the driver. Some drivers have Tunnel Vision,
there are lots of excuses and or pointing fingers at who's fault it really is?? We all need to watch where we are going and how to get there safely and return home safely.
